College of Optics and Photonics

Photonic Science and Engineering, College of Optics and Photonics:  Think about where you see the use of light in daily life.  From the displays on your cell phone to the sophisticated technology needed to make the smartphone “smart”, photonics uses light to transmit, transfer and store information.

Photonic Engineers design the technologies that use and generate light – in the equipment needed to make and inspect the integrated circuits used all electronic devices, the high‐efficiency lighting, displays, and solar power systems, the high speed fiber optics forming the backbone of the internet, and the medical applications used in clinical diagnosis, surgery, and genome mapping.  Put simply, without photonics, daily life would be very different!
